Enlarged prostate (BPH): symptoms, tests, and treatment options

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that becomes more common with age. It can slow urine flow and disrupt sleep, but it is very treatable once properly diagnosed.

Что такое BPH

BPH stands for benign prostatic hyperplasia — a gradual, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that happens in most men as they age. As the prostate grows, it can press on the urethra and make it harder to pass urine.

BPH is not prostate cancer and does not turn into cancer, but the two can cause similar urinary symptoms, which is why proper evaluation matters.

Когда следует обратиться к урологу?

See a urologist if urination is becoming slow, interrupted, or incomplete, if you are waking up multiple times at night to urinate, or if you have ever been unable to urinate at all.

Early evaluation helps rule out other causes and prevents complications like urinary retention or kidney strain.

What your symptom severity means for treatment

Mild

Occasional urgency or a slightly slower stream. Often managed with monitoring and simple lifestyle changes.

Moderate

Frequent night urination and a noticeably weaker stream. Usually managed well with medicines.

Severe

Straining, incomplete emptying, or repeated retention. May need a minimally invasive or surgical procedure.

Treatment options for enlarged prostate

Lifestyle and monitoring

Best for: Mild symptomsOngoing review

Reducing evening fluids, limiting caffeine and alcohol, and scheduled follow-up to track symptom progression.

Medicines

Best for: Mild to moderate symptomsOngoing, reviewed periodically

Alpha-blockers relax the prostate and bladder neck for quicker relief; 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can shrink the prostate over months.

Minimally invasive / laser procedures

Best for: Moderate to severe symptomsDay care to short stay

Procedures such as laser enucleation or TURP relieve blockage directly, with a shorter recovery than open surgery for most patients.

Note: Dr. Vikram recommends the least invasive option that gives lasting symptom relief.

Dr. Vikram's experience in BPH care

Dr. Vikram evaluates and treats BPH using a stepwise approach — starting with the least invasive option that will genuinely relieve symptoms, and escalating only when needed.

Every plan accounts for prostate size, PSA trend, bladder health, and how much the symptoms are actually affecting daily life and sleep.

Relief without unnecessary surgery

Many men improve significantly with medicines alone. When a procedure is needed, modern laser and endoscopic techniques allow most patients to go home within a day or two.

"BPH is one of the most common reasons men see a urologist — and one of the most treatable."
